According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos are three neighboring countries with traditional friendly relations and increasingly deep cooperation in many fields. The border region between the three countries is not only a geographical connection but also an important bridge for economic, cultural, and trade exchanges.

In recent years, economic corridors, international border gates, border economic zones, and cross-border logistics networks between Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos have increasingly played a role in the circulation of goods and services and attracting investment.

Cambodia is currently one of Vietnam's largest trading partners in ASEAN. In 2025, bilateral trade is projected to reach approximately USD 11.33 billion, an increase of 11.7% compared to the previous year. Notably, the agreement to promote bilateral trade between Vietnam and Cambodia for the period 2025-2026 has created further opportunities for cooperation in border trade, logistics, supply chain connectivity, and market expansion. The two countries are aiming to increase bilateral trade to USD 20 billion in the near future.

For Laos, 2025 presented many positive signs in economic and trade cooperation. New cooperation mechanisms in trade, energy, coal, and electricity continued to drive growth. Bilateral trade relations have been  supported by the revised Vietnam-Laos Trade Agreement of 2024, the Vietnam-Laos Border Trade Agreement, and cooperation agreements on electricity and coal signed in 2025.

The Vietnam-Laos trade structure is highly complementary. Vietnam exports machinery and equipment, construction materials, petroleum products, consumer goods, and processed industrial products to Laos. Meanwhile, Vietnam imports electricity, coal, minerals, rubber, wood, and many agricultural products from Laos.

Deputy Director General of the Trade Promotion Department Bui Quang Hung delivers a speech at the conference

Deputy Director of the Trade Promotion Department Bui Quang Hung said: In the recent time, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, together with other ministries, sectors, localities, and Vietnamese trade offices in Cambodia and Laos, have coordinated to organize many trade fairs, exhibitions, business forums, trade connection conferences, and trade delegations.

According to Mr. Bui Quang Hung, these activities have contributed to promoting business connections, expanding markets, and enhancing the effectiveness of economic cooperation in the border areas of the three countries. In particular, the exchange of goods through border crossings not only contributes to local economic growth but also helps maintain the stability and sustainability of the regional supply chain.

However, in the context of a rapidly shifting global economy, Mr. Hung believes that Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos need to innovate their border trade management and operation methods to more effectively exploit existing potential and participate more deeply in the global value chain.

Mr. Bui Quang Hung affirmed that the Ministry of Industry and Trade will continue to closely coordinate with relevant ministries and agencies of Vietnam, as well as functional agencies of Cambodia and Laos, to build a favorable trade environment. Simultaneously, all parties will accelerate administrative procedure reforms; develop border trade infrastructure, logistics, and cross-border e-commerce; and jointly strengthen trade promotion activities, supporting businesses in digital transformation and green transformation.
